Anthropic’s recent clash with the U.S. Department of Defense has introduced a new category of enterprise risk: algorithmic supply chain exposure. After the company declined a Pentagon request to remove certain safeguards from its AI systems, the federal government designated Anthropic as a supply chain and security risk. The move places the AI firm in a regulatory category typically associated with foreign adversary-linked companies.
While Anthropic has signaled plans to pursue legal action, the designation is already triggering compliance obligations for Department of Defense contractors. The implications extend far beyond the company’s reported $200 million government contract.

Traditional supply chain interventions target physical inputs. Governments restrict microchips, telecom equipment or industrial components because they are visible, traceable and replaceable.
AI models are different.
