Musk says US government controls Starlink restrictions affecting Ukrainian drones
Elon Musk has disputed suggestions that SpaceX independently restricted Ukraine's military satellite communications, saying the US government controls limitations on Starshield, as Ukrainian forces report disrupted drone missions.

Elon Musk has said the United States government controls restrictions on Starshield satellite communications used by Ukraine's military, following reports that new connectivity limits have disrupted Ukrainian drone operations during the war with Russia.
The SpaceX chief executive disputed suggestions that his company independently imposed the restrictions, explaining that limits affecting Starshield, the military-focused version of Starlink operated for the US government, are determined by Washington, according to a report published by Via Satellite on Wednesday, 14 October 2026.
The clarification follows complaints from Ukrainian military officials that sudden restrictions on satellite terminals had interrupted drone missions, complicating battlefield operations and raising questions about the reliability of critical communications infrastructure.
Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukraine's leadership on defence technology, said Starlink connectivity had been restricted for military equipment travelling at high speeds.
According to Reuters, the restrictions reportedly affected military-grade terminals operating above approximately 160 kilometres per hour.
Ukraine's 7th Rapid Reaction Corps also reported interruptions at lower speeds, between 110 and 120 kilometres per hour, with connections dropping for periods of 10 to 20 seconds.
The interruptions made drones more difficult to control and forced military units to cancel some planned missions. Ukrainian officials said they had received no advance warning of the changes.
Starlink has supported Ukrainian battlefield communications since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Its resistance to electronic interference has made the technology important for reconnaissance, logistics and drone operations.
Musk points to US government control
Musk's explanation introduces an important distinction between SpaceX's commercial Starlink service and Starshield, which is designed for government and national security applications.
His position suggests that decisions governing certain military communications restrictions fall under US government authority rather than being made independently by SpaceX.
However, the precise circumstances surrounding the latest restrictions have not been independently established, and Musk's comments do not by themselves confirm that Washington specifically ordered the reported limitations.
US President Donald Trump has pressed Ukraine to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries, while Ukrainian officials have expressed concern about the continuity of American military and intelligence support.

Nevertheless, no direct causal connection has been established between those disagreements and the reported Starlink restrictions.
Restrictions highlight Ukraine's reliance on satellite technology
The disruption has exposed the operational risks associated with depending heavily on satellite communications supplied through external providers.
Interruptions in connectivity can affect the ability to direct drones, coordinate movements and maintain communication between military units.
The restrictions have also raised questions about how access to privately developed but government-controlled technologies is managed during international conflicts.
For Ukraine, the immediate concern remains maintaining reliable communications while responding to continued Russian military operations.
The reported restrictions and Musk's explanation leave unresolved which authority authorised the specific changes, why they were introduced and whether the affected services will be restored to their previous operating conditions.
