President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa has congratulated President Paul Kagame and the government and people of Rwanda following the country’s successful bid to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix under a 10-year agreement starting in the early 2030s.
In a message issued on behalf of the South African government and people, Ramaphosa praised Rwanda for securing the agreement, describing it as recognition of the capabilities of the Rwandan nation and Africa more broadly.
He said South Africa shared in Rwanda’s pride as the country prepares to host the globally prestigious motorsport event at the planned Bugesera circuit.
Ramaphosa also expressed South Africa’s willingness to offer support and share its experience if invited, noting the country’s history of hosting major international events and its role in staging the first Formula 1 Grand Prix on African soil in 1993.
He described the upcoming race as another major addition to Rwanda’s growing portfolio of international events, including the UCI-classified Tour du Rwanda cycling race.
Ramaphosa congratulated Rwanda on the achievement, expressing confidence that hosting the Grand Prix would help raise Africa’s profile in motorsport and contribute to the sport’s development on the continent.
Rwanda’s 10-year agreement marks a significant step towards Formula 1’s return to Africa after more than three decades. A purpose-built circuit is planned in Bugesera, near the new Kigali International Airport, with further details on the inaugural race and construction timeline expected to be announced later.
