China Sets Sights on Blockchain-Based National Data Infrastructure

In a significant move toward digital innovation, China’s government unveiled a new directive on Monday, aiming to develop a blockchain-based national data infrastructure. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), in collaboration with two other government bodies, introduced the “National Data Infrastructure Construction Guidelines,” which promise to revolutionize data exchange and management through blockchain technology and enhanced data sensitization.

The guidelines propose the integration of blockchain to bolster data security via smart contracts, focusing on safeguarding critical data. The initiative aims to ensure the authenticity and security of sensitive information, marking a notable exploration into blockchain’s potential for securing national data.

According to the document, the new system is expected to be operational by 2029, with key components such as top-level design slated for completion by 2026. The plan underscores the importance of blockchain in minimizing data tampering and addressing security challenges. By leveraging blockchain, the guidelines suggest a framework that not only secures data storage but also fosters public trust in the technology.

The Chinese government emphasized that blockchain technology is crucial for ensuring secure data circulation and protecting encrypted national security data. The envisioned system aims to create a trustworthy data circulation environment, deterring data theft and enhancing overall security.

This initiative will enable secure data sharing among the government, industries, and businesses, with blockchain ensuring data integrity and immutability. The system will integrate the necessary hardware, software, and technological components to function effectively, furthering China’s digital transformation.

Despite banning cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin in 2021, China continues to pursue blockchain technology vigorously. In 2022, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) launched a program dedicated to blockchain research. Additionally, China has incorporated blockchain into its international projects, notably through the Belt and Road Initiative, which seeks to connect countries via advanced technology.

China’s proactive stance on blockchain signifies its commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance national data infrastructure, security, and public trust.
