The incident occurred during the first leg of the Minas Gerais Under-20 Championship semi-final between Uberlândia and Mamoré in Brazil.
Mamoré won the match 3–1, but the result was overshadowed by a confrontation that involved players, coaches and other club personnel.
According to the referee's report, the trouble escalated after Mamoré scored its third goal in the second half. The goalscorer, Davi Fernandes Bittencourt, reportedly made provocative gestures towards the opposing team's bench while celebrating.
The situation intensified when Uberlândia's goalkeeping coach, Paulo Sérgio Dias dos Santos, entered the pitch and confronted the player. This triggered a mass brawl involving members of both teams.
The referee, Fernando Patrick Drosghic Modesto, recorded 48 additional dismissals following the confrontation. Three players had already been sent off earlier in the match, bringing the official reported total to 51: 43 players and eight members of the coaching staff.
The match was interrupted for approximately 40 minutes before being abandoned amid continuing disorder. Reports also indicated that chairs, doors, windows and changing-room facilities were damaged, prompting the involvement of military police.
Previous record surpassed
The incident surpassed the previous reported record of 36 red cards, issued during a fifth-division match between Argentine clubs Atlético Claypole and Victoriano Arenas in February 2011.
The Brazilian incident has also been reported as involving 53 dismissals when two club officials are included in the count. However, the official match-report tally identifies 51 players and coaching staff members.
What happened after the match?
Uberlândia subsequently announced that it would forfeit the second leg of the semi-final, describing the decision as a gesture of fair play because of the disciplinary situation affecting the opposing team.
The extraordinary incident has drawn international attention, raising questions about discipline, player safety and the responsibilities of clubs and officials in youth football.
