FIFA suspends Egypt coach Hossam Hassan and forward Zico over World Cup referee criticism
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan and team director Ibrahim Hassan have each received three-match bans, while forward Mostafa Zico faces a five-match suspension following the country's controversial World Cup defeat to Argentina.

FIFA has suspended Egypt national team head coach Hossam Hassan, team director Ibrahim Hassan and forward Mostafa Zico following their criticism of refereeing decisions during the country's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed on Monday, 19 October, that FIFA's Disciplinary Committee had imposed three-match bans on Hossam Hassan and his twin brother Ibrahim, while Zico received a five-match suspension.
The penalties stem from Egypt's 3-2 defeat to defending champions Argentina in the World Cup round of 16, a match in which the Pharaohs surrendered a two-goal lead after several disputed refereeing decisions.
The EFA initially requested the disciplinary committee's detailed reasoning to assess its legal options. By Tuesday, Egyptian media reported that the association was proceeding with an appeal under the supervision of its president, Hany Abo Rida.
Refereeing controversy follows dramatic Argentina comeback
Egypt's World Cup campaign ended in dramatic circumstances in Atlanta after Argentina recovered from a 2-0 deficit to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
The match featured several decisions contested by Egypt's players and coaching staff.
One of the most contentious incidents involved Zico, whose goal was disallowed after the video assistant referee identified an earlier foul on Argentina defender Lisandro Martínez.
Zico subsequently scored to give Egypt a two-goal advantage.
Argentina responded through Cristian Romero before Lionel Messi equalised, having earlier missed a penalty.
Enzo Fernández then scored the decisive goal to complete Argentina's comeback.
Egypt were also angered by an incident involving Alexis Mac Allister and Hamdy Fathy in the build-up to the winning goal. The Egyptian players believed they should have been awarded a penalty for a shirt pull.
French referee François Letexier did not award the spot-kick, prompting further protests.
Following the match, Hossam Hassan publicly accused the officials of unfairly treating his team and questioned the decisions that contributed to Egypt's elimination.
Zico also criticised the officiating during a post-match interview.
The resulting disciplinary proceedings placed both the team's technical leadership and one of its attacking players under FIFA scrutiny.

The Egyptian Football Association confirmed the disciplinary measures in an official statement, identifying all three individuals and the length of their respective bans.
The federation said it had sought the full grounds for FIFA's ruling before evaluating the appropriate legal response.
In a further development reported on 20 October, the EFA confirmed that its legal department was handling the appeal process and that Hossam Hassan was not personally directing the proceedings.
The association's initial public statement did not specify the disciplinary provisions applied to each individual or provide the committee's complete legal reasoning.
Although reports have linked the sanctions to criticism of the referee, the full disciplinary findings remain important for establishing the precise basis of each punishment.
FIFA's refereeing chief, Pierluigi Collina, defended the officiating and warned that accusations against match officials could expose referees and their families to threats.
Bans could disrupt Egypt's Africa Cup of Nations preparations
The suspensions could affect Egypt's preparations for upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures.
Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan may miss the national team's November matches against Malawi and a further international fixture in March, depending on how the bans are applied and whether any appeal changes their enforcement.
Zico faces a longer absence from international action, with reports indicating that his five-match suspension could keep him unavailable until June 2027.
