The new Real Madrid striker will keep a foot in France by buying the majority of the shares of French Ligue 2 SM Caen. At 25, he is set to be one of the youngest owners of a professional football club in Europe as he continues to write history, following in his idol Cristiano Ronaldo’s footsteps.
When his childhood dream of becoming part of the “La Madridista” family, or as the locals call it, “Los Blancos” finally came true, Kylian Mbappé proudly kissed the crest of his new team, Real Madrid, several times at the long-awaited presentation to the fans at the home stadium, the infamous “Estadio Santiago Bernabéu,” with the club president and owner present and a huge ovation from 80, 000 fans from across Spain and other parts of the world, as well as his fans from his boyhood club, Paris St. Germain.
“I have dreamed of this day since I was a child. And today, my dream is coming true. It’s incredible. Wow, it’s incredible to be here! I am a happy boy today, a very happy one,” said the new Madridista signing in fluent Spanish at his gigantic presentation on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. He was “very happy to be part of the greatest club in the history of football.”
Kylian Mbappé has chosen to continue his career in Spain; the new number 9 for the Spanish giants Real Madrid will keep one foot in France. And not just in Paris, of course; after seven seasons, he leaves as the club’s all-time top scorer (256); his name will remain engraved in the capital. But more unexpectedly, his name will also be invited to Normandy, France.
The rumor was true. According to information from Le Parisien, Kylian Mbappé will indeed become the majority shareholder of Stade Malherbe Caen, the club reportedly said the player nearly played for when he was younger. Our colleagues confirm that the Real Madrid striker will buy the majority of the shares for just under 20 million euros. The Frenchman will thus succeed the American investment fund Oaktree and will lead the Normandy club alongside Pierre-Antoine Capton, the chairman of the supervisory board who still owns the rest of the shares.
Mbappé, following in the footsteps of David Beckham, is expected to appoint Ziad Hammoud, the current head of his brand image team, as the new president, along with his mother, Fayza Lamari. Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé is set to become one of Europe’s youngest club owners after he agreed on a deal to buy a majority stake in Ligue 2 side Caen in a €20 million deal, the former club for players including Mbappé’s France current teammate N’Golo Kanté and ex-Les Bleus defender and Arsenal captain William Gallas.
Negotiations between the parties have been ongoing for several weeks and are set to close soon, the Le Parisien newspaper reported. The deal will see France’s star forward own 80% of the club – which finished last season in sixth place in the second division, and France captain Kylian Mbappé is set to become the majority owner of second-division club Caen, French media reported Monday. Mbappé, 25, who joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, will spend 20 million euros ($21.6 million) to buy an 80 percent stake in the Ligue 2 outfit from American investors Oaktree, according to newspaper Le Parisien.
The 2018 World Cup winner almost joined Caen as a teenager before eventually signing for Monaco. Caen finished in sixth place in Ligue 2 last season. The two-time Ligue 2 champions, established in 1913, start the new campaign by hosting Paris FC on August 17, marking the start of yet another new adventure for the French international, who is expected to also buy back part of the debts as part of the deal.
