Soccer player Kylian Mbappé has referred to the first round of the French elections as “catastrophic,” citing the country’s shift to the far-right as a result of last Sunday’s results, which saw the anti-immigration National Rally (RN) take the lead.
Voting is “now more than ever” necessary, according to the captain of France’s national football team, who is gearing up for Les Bleus’ Euro 2024 quarterfinal match against Portugal in Hamburg on Friday.
“It’s really urgent; there’s an emergency and we can’t let these people control our country,” Mbappe remarked during a press conference in Hamburg, Germany.
With the far right vying for actual political power, President Emmanuel Macron’s unexpected decision to hold early legislative elections in June rocked financial markets and threw France into political unrest.
Last Sunday, the RN secured 33.15% of the vote following a high attendance at the polls. The left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) coalition secured second place, while President Emmanuel Macron’s party declined to third.
Nothing is guaranteed ahead of Sunday’s second round, but if the RN wins, it would become the first far-right party to enter the French government since World War II.
This next Sunday is the second round of voting, and Mbappé is hoping that “everyone will mobilise to vote.”
The captain of France stated, “We really hope that it will change and that everyone will mobilise to vote and make the right choice.”
When he’s playing for the French national football team at Euro 2024, Mbappé has discussed French politics before.
According to Reuters last month, France’s talisman told reporters, “This is a never-seen-before event.” And for that reason, in addition to the youth, I wish to speak with all French people.
Our generation has the power to change things. We can influence the future of our nation, even though we can see that the extremes are attempting to gain control.
The Algerian and Cameroonian native Mbappé emphasised that he didn’t want to “represent a country” that didn’t share his “values.”
Earlier this week, Mbappé’s Les Bleus colleague Jules Kounde, a 25-year-old French native representing Benin, shared his “political position” with the media during the Euros tournament.
“I was disappointed to discover that France is moving in a direction that goes against our principles, strongly endorsing a party… After Monday’s France vs. Belgium round of 16 match, Kounde told reporters, “I think it’s important to block the extreme right, the National Rally, because this party will not lead our country towards more freedom.”
