Miki Sudo breaks the women’s record and Patrick Bertoletti wins the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Patrick Bertoletti, the champion of Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest, celebrated on Thursday despite the possibility of a ghost at the feast.

Naturally, 16-time champion Joey Chestnut, who made a deal with the plant-based food startup Impossible Foods, was not participating in the competition.

After one of the most closely contested races in recent memory, Bertoletti drew away in the last moments to win with 58 hot dogs.

The women’s competition at Nathan’s Famous kicked off in a historic way when defending champion Miki Sudo shattered the record by consuming 51 hot dogs and buns.

She won her 10th title in the competition, defeating Mayoi Ebihara, who came in second, by a margin of 14 hot dogs and buns.

Following her historic feat, Sudo told ESPN, “We finally beat 50, guys.” “See you in the next year.”

Bertoletti defeated the final two finishers, Geoffrey Esper (53), and James Webb (52). According to the ESPN2 broadcast, this was Bertoletti’s first title in his ninth career appearance.

However, this year’s event had a gap the size of a chestnut. The master of chewing has won the “Mustard Yellow Belt” sixteen times, and in 2021 he set a world record by consuming 76 hot dogs and buns in ten minutes.

Chestnut wasn’t going to let Independence Day pass without accepting a culinary challenge, even if he wasn’t participating in Nathan’s Famous.

At the Fort Bliss post in El Paso, Texas, the 40-year-old participated in his own live-streamed showcase event, where he faced off against four US Army soldiers in a “all-beef” hot dog eating competition that collected money for military families.

In five minutes, Chestnut consumed 57 hot dogs, while the soldiers he faced could only manage a maximum of 49.

With a championship belt slung over his shoulder, Chestnut declared, “Hot dogs on the Fourth of July in front of people who are celebrating America – it doesn’t get any better than this.”

With 106 total hot dogs devoured, $106,000 was raised and donated to military families.

According to reports, Chestnut had stated his goal was to consume more hotdogs in five minutes than Nathan’s competition winner consumes in ten.

According to USA Today, he had stated, “I think 56 is doable.” “That would make me very happy to do.”

How about the following year?

Citing his 20-year association with the league, the Major League Eating (MLE) organisation, which manages the globally recognised event, has underscored that Chestnut is not permanently barred from competing. The group stated that Chestnut would have to give up endorsements from businesses that compete with Nathan’s in order to return.

“America’s hero is Joey Chestnut. He has been the reigning champion of Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest for years, and we would adore having him there. In a statement, MLE added, “We hope he returns when he is not representing a rival brand.”
