The Annual Staff-led Community Service Programme of MTN Rwanda Y’ello Care Reopens to Improve Rural and Remote Communities’ Access to Education

In honour of the MTN Group’s 30th anniversary of worldwide operations, MTN Rwanda has announced the return of its yearly “21 Days of Y’ello Care” campaign, which has been expanded to “30 Days of Y’ello Care” this year.

The Y’ello Care programme, which was introduced in 2007, encourages MTN staff members to volunteer and support the communities they work in by implementing significant social projects.

The goal of this year’s campaign is to increase access to educational opportunities throughout Rwanda with a focus on “Education for Rural and Remote Communities.” Under the tagline “Learn Today Lead Tomorrow,” MTN Rwanda employees will participate in initiatives aimed at removing obstacles to education and providing people with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.

MTN Rwanda has announced the return of its annual “21 Days of Y’ello Care” initiative, which this year has been extended to “30 Days of Y’ello Care” in celebration of MTN Group’s 30th anniversary of global operations.

Launched in 2007, the Y’ello Care program encourages MTN employees to volunteer and give back to the communities they serve through high-impact social projects.

This year’s initiative focuses on “Education for Rural and Remote Communities,” aiming to expand access to educational opportunities across Rwanda. MTN Rwanda staff will engage in activities designed to eliminate barriers to education and empower individuals with knowledge and skills, under the motto “Learn Today Lead Tomorrow.”

Throughout the 30 days, MTN Rwanda employees will participate in various projects, including:

  • Donating and installing solar panels to generate electricity and promote clean energy.
  • Providing digital screens in schools to enhance the learning experience.
  • Constructing school kitchens in Gasabo and Gicumbi Districts.
  • Donating laptops and mentoring students at the Mahama Refugee coding school.

The Y’ello Care campaign this year is very meaningful because it marks the 30th anniversary of MTN Group. We are extending our community service term to celebrate this milestone and spread the happiness throughout our communities. The CEO of MTN Rwanda, Mapula Bodibe, stated, “We hope to have a long-lasting effect and contribute to bettering access to education in rural communities by focusing on education in rural and remote areas.”

One of the major initiatives is the installation of solar panels at GS Agateko School, which will provide electricity to almost 2,100 pupils all day long.

“This year’s Y’ello Care initiative is particularly special as we celebrate MTN Group’s 30th anniversary. To mark this milestone, we are extending our period of community service to share the joy with our communities. By focusing on education in rural and remote areas, we aim to make a lasting impact and help improve access to education in rural communities,” commented Mapula Bodibe, MTN Rwanda Chief Executive Officer.

One of the key projects involves the installation of solar panels at GS Agateko school, benefiting approximately 2,100 students with electricity throughout the day.

This project also includes the provision of digital screens in classrooms, preparing students for the modern workforce and supporting diverse learning needs.

In line with the recently launched Ndi Ready campaign, MTN Rwanda will construct a school kitchen in Gicumbi District, aimed at improving student nutrition, attendance, and academic performance by ensuring they receive nutritious meals in a clean, safe environment.

At the Mahama Refugee Camp, graduating students from the camp’s coding program will receive laptops and mentoring sessions.

MTN Rwanda aims to equip these students with essential tools to continue their education and pursue career opportunities in the tech industry, fostering digital literacy and enhancing their employability.

To bring these projects to life, MTN Rwanda has partnered with local governments, specifically the districts of Gasabo, Gicumbi, and Kirehe, as well as BBOXX Rwanda.

John Uwizeye, Managing Director of BBOXX Rwanda, stated, “At BBOXX we transform lives and unlock potential through energy access. Therefore, we are pleased to partner with MTN Rwanda to propel this mission. Together, we are lighting the path to a brighter future for these students.”

By investing in educational opportunities and infrastructure, MTN Rwanda aims to foster long-term community development and empower students with essential skills for their future success.

These initiatives are designed to create a sustainable impact, helping students in rural and remote areas overcome educational barriers and achieve their full potential.

Bodibe concluded, “I would like to thank our valuable partners for joining forces with us on these social impact projects. Thank you to the Districts of Gasabo, Gicumbi, and BBOXX Rwanda for supporting us.”
