Rwanda National Police (RNP) remind motorists to observe road traffic rules and regulations to avoid accidents to safeguard lives of passengers and other road users.
There has been a trend of fatal accidents resulting from reckless driving behaviours.
The RNP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Boniface Rutikanga, said: “There is increased traffic flow due to ongoing presidential and parliamentary campaigns. We urge motorists and drivers in particular to exercise maximum caution to avoid anything that can cause accidents and likely loss of lives.”
He added: “It is the responsibility of drivers to ensure the safety of passengers, and that goes with regulating speed, avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol or while intoxicated; overloading, using a phone, driving under fatigue or stress and to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy to prevent accidents caused by mechanical faults.”
The spokesperson also reminded passengers and pedestrians to be responsive against any practices that can lead to fatalities, such as attempting to board moving vehicles and loitering in the middle of the road.
