West Palm Beach, FL – Former President Donald Trump has recounted his experience during what authorities are investigating as an apparent assassination attempt at his West Palm Beach golf club on Sunday. Speaking during a livestream with cryptocurrency influencer Farokh Sarmad, Trump thanked the Secret Service and praised a civilian who helped track the suspect by reporting vehicle details.
The incident unfolded while Trump was golfing with friends, including businessman Steve Witkoff. “Everything was beautiful, nice place to be, and all of a sudden we heard shots being fired in the air,” Trump said, adding that the Secret Service immediately recognized the sound as gunfire. Trump described how agents quickly evacuated him from the course, commending their swift response: “We got into the carts and moved along pretty good.”
The U.S. Secret Service confirmed the incident on Monday, identifying the suspect as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh. Routh, who camped out near the golf course for 12 hours before being confronted, did not fire any shots, according to acting Secret Service director Ronald Rowe Jr. An agent opened fire after spotting a rifle emerging from bushes near the golf course perimeter, but no one was harmed.
Routh’s motives remain unclear, though records suggest he had a mix of political convictions, including donations to Democratic candidates and having voted for Trump in 2016. This comes after another apparent assassination attempt in July in Pennsylvania, involving gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks, whose motivations also remain uncertain.
Trump acknowledged these incidents in his livestream, blaming what he called divisive rhetoric from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. He claimed, “Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at,” accusing Democrats of trying to “destroy the country.”
In response, the White House confirmed that Biden called Trump to express relief that he was safe. The two reportedly had a cordial conversation, with Trump thanking Biden for his concern. However, Trump did not hold back from further attacking Harris, accusing her of espousing “Marxist Communist” views, signaling the high political tensions ahead of the 2024 election.
