San Francisco, [27 January 2025] – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Europe and Central Asia has formed a strategic partnership with the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) to leverage blockchain technology in order to expedite progress towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and enhance global financial inclusion.

This collaboration aims to develop scalable blockchain solutions that promote equitable economic growth and bolster economic resilience in developing areas. By utilizing the Stellar network and open-source tools, the partnership seeks to improve access to digital financial services, enable transparent and efficient cross-border transactions, and offer secure, low-cost digital payment options for humanitarian aid, remittances, and national cash transfer programs. The initiative will focus on empowering underserved communities and fostering innovation in emerging economies through joint pilot projects, knowledge sharing, and capacity building.

Robert Pasicko, Project Manager at UNDP’s Alternative Finance Lab, stated: “Our partnership with the Stellar Development Foundation marks a significant step in utilizing advanced technology for sustainable development. With nearly 1 billion people globally using cryptocurrencies and digital wallets, the potential for these tools to effect meaningful change in development and humanitarian efforts is vast. By combining UNDP’s global expertise with Stellar’s network capabilities, we aim to create innovative solutions that improve lives and communities. Together, we are committed to harnessing blockchain’s power for global social impact.”

Denelle Dixon, CEO of the Stellar Development Foundation, remarked, “The Stellar network is designed to provide access to the global financial system for everyone, regardless of their location. Collaborating with UNDP to utilize blockchain technology for international development and financial inclusion aligns seamlessly with our mission. This partnership embodies the transformative impact the Stellar Development Foundation was established to achieve. We are thrilled to contribute to this vital effort to foster innovation and empower communities worldwide.”
