In a recent cybersecurity breach, Virtuals Protocol, an AI agent platform, reported that its Discord server was compromised. The incident, which occurred after a private key linked to one of the Discord moderators was exposed, allowed unauthorized access to the server. The breach led to the dissemination of malicious links, according to a statement from the Virtuals team.
The company assured users that the situation has since been resolved.
Cybersecurity firm Scam Sniffer discovered three phishing links mimicking the Virtuals Protocol website on Google Search. The company urged users to avoid these links and to verify information through official channels before engaging in any online activities. They highlighted the growing sophistication of phishing attacks, particularly those targeting cryptocurrency holders to steal digital assets.
Phishing scams continue to be a significant concern in the cybersecurity landscape, especially within the cryptocurrency sector. Blockchain security firm CertiK reported that phishing attacks led to losses exceeding $1 billion in 2024, marking them as the most financially damaging type of attack last year.
Additionally, issues related to private keys contributed to further losses of $855 million in 2024. The overall financial impact of hacks and scams rose by 21% compared to 2023, with the number of incidents increasing from 282 to 303, according to CertiK. This trend underscores the growing vulnerability of centralized systems to cybercriminals.
Chainalysis observed a concentrated effort in 2024 to infiltrate centralized services and compromise private keys. Another cybersecurity firm, Cyvers, reported a dramatic 1,000% surge in attacks on centralized products during the year, highlighting the escalating threat to digital security in the crypto space.
