TikTok Bans AI Influencer Accounts After Investigation

BBC revealed a rise in fake AI influencer accounts posing as Black women. These accounts pushed users to external sites with explicit content.

TikTok responded by banning 20 accounts that broke its rules. The investigation, done with Riddance, found many similar profiles on TikTok and Instagram.

Most of these accounts used AI-generated images but did not label them. This breaks platform guidelines. While TikTok removed accounts, Meta said it is still reviewing the issue.

Rising Concerns About Misleading and Harmful Content

Many accounts showed digital avatars with exaggerated features and very dark, edited skin tones. They often used racialized names and captions. Critics say this trend promotes harmful stereotypes.

Researchers found about 60 accounts linking to paid adult sites. Those sites clearly labeled the content as AI-generated. However, the social media posts did not.

Many users believed the avatars were real. Some accounts even denied using AI. This made the situation more misleading and harder to detect.

Real Creators Affected and Ethical Questions Grow

One account copied videos from Riya Ulan, a model from Malaysia. It placed an AI face over her body and reposted the videos. The account gained millions of followers in a short time.

Some altered videos got far more views than the original ones. Riya said she felt angry because someone used her content without permission. She also worried that people believed the fake version was real.

Experts warn that this trend raises serious concerns. They point to racism, exploitation, and loss of real representation. AI makes it easier to create and spread this type of content without consequences.

TikTok says it does not allow misleading AI content or stolen material. Meta says it is still investigating the accounts.
