The Iranian government has executed by hanging a man who had been sentenced to death for working as a spy for Israel.
On September 17, 2025, the man, identified as Babak Shahbazi, was executed after being convicted of collecting and selling classified information about Iran’s cybersecurity institutions and security operations to the Israeli intelligence agency (Mossad), according to state media reports.
Iran has long been at odds with Israel. This year alone, the country has executed nine people accused of collaborating with Mossad or supporting its operations inside Iran.
Shahbazi had ties with Esmaeil Fekri, who was also executed in June. Both were suspected of working with Mossad since early 2022.
Shahbazi, who worked as a refrigeration technician, allegedly used his position to gather information about institutions linked to Iran’s national security, extracting data from their servers.
His lawyer had requested an appeal to the Supreme Court, but the court dismissed the petition.
