Manchester United have held early discussions with three former players about taking over as caretaker manager until the end of the season. The talks involved Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
According to BBC Sport, the discussions remain at a preliminary stage. However, sources say Carrick is a serious candidate to replace Ruben Amorim on an interim basis.
Amorim Sacked After Turbulent Spell
United sacked Ruben Amorim on Monday following a difficult 14-month spell in charge. After his dismissal, the club appointed former midfielder Darren Fletcher as interim manager.
Fletcher will stay in the role until the club names a caretaker manager. Meanwhile, United plan to appoint a permanent head coach in the summer.
Former Players Considered
Director of football Jason Wilcox has spoken with Fletcher, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick about the short-term role.
Another former United striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy, has also emerged as a possible candidate. Van Nistelrooy previously served as caretaker in 2024, guiding the team to three wins and one draw.
Solskjaer first took charge in a similar role in 2018 after the club sacked Jose Mourinho. He later became permanent manager and remained in charge until 2021. Carrick, meanwhile, has been without a club since leaving Middlesbrough last June.
Permanent Appointment Planned for Summer
While the club considers short-term options, it has already identified early candidates for the permanent job. These include Oliver Glasner and Roberto De Zerbi, who currently coaches Marseille.
When asked about the link, Glasner dismissed speculation during a news conference on Tuesday. “I am Crystal Palace manager,” he said. “It makes no sense to ask me about it.”
Fletcher Focused on Immediate Task
Fletcher addressed the media ahead of Wednesday night’s match against Burnley. He said his full focus remains on preparing the team.
“It’s surreal and an amazing honour to lead Manchester United,” Fletcher said. “I never imagined this could happen. Everything has moved very quickly.”
He added that expectations at the club remain high. “Everyone expects Manchester United to win,” he said. “I will do my best, in whatever role, to help achieve that.”
