Nigeria: Gunmen Kill 30 Civilians in Niger State Attack

At least 30 civilians were killed after armed gunmen attacked a market in Niger State, northern Nigeria, police confirmed on Monday. Several other people were abducted during the assault.

The attack took place at Kasuwan Daji market in the village of Demo, according to Niger State Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun.

Gunmen Storm Market and Burn Shops

In a statement, Abiodun said the attackers stormed the busy market, opened fire on civilians, and set shops on fire.

“More than 30 people lost their lives in the attack, while others were abducted,” Abiodun said.

He added that the gunmen also looted food supplies and destroyed property before fleeing the area.

Attackers Arrived on Motorcycles

Witnesses told Reuters that the attackers arrived on motorcycles and shot indiscriminately at people in the market. Women and children were among those kidnapped.

One resident said security forces did not arrive during the attack.

“No security personnel came while the attack was ongoing. We are now collecting bodies,” the witness said.

Bandits Linked to Nearby Forest Hideout

Police believe the attackers came from Kabe forest, a nearby area known to shelter armed criminal gangs operating in the region.

Authorities said security operations are ongoing to track down the attackers and rescue those abducted.

Growing Insecurity in Northern Nigeria

Nigeria continues to face deadly attacks by armed bandits, particularly in northern states. These groups often target villages, schools, and markets for killings, looting, and kidnappings.

In November 2025, more than 250 students were abducted from St Mary’s school in Niger State. Many were later rescued by security forces.

The latest attack adds to growing concerns over civilian safety and the effectiveness of security operations in the region.
