Technology company Nvidia has unveiled a new artificial intelligence system designed to enable vehicles to drive themselves without human control.

The technology will be integrated into vehicles manufactured by Mercedes-Benz, with Nvidia providing the advanced AI platform that powers the system.

Alpamayo Technology Explained

Speaking at the launch, Nvidia President and CEO Jensen Huang said the AI system, known as Alpamayo, represents a major step forward in autonomous driving.

According to Huang, the technology allows vehicles to operate safely even in difficult conditions.

“This system enables vehicles to drive smoothly in challenging environments and explain the reasoning behind each decision they make,” Huang said.

Focus on Safety and Decision-Making

The Alpamayo system is designed not only to drive autonomously but also to communicate its actions. The vehicle can explain what it is about to do and why it made a particular decision.

This feature is expected to improve trust and safety in self-driving technology.

Global Rollout Planned

Jensen Huang revealed that Nvidia has been in discussions with Mercedes-Benz to develop fully driverless vehicles.

The first rollout is expected to begin in the United States, followed by expansion into Asia and Europe.

From Chips to Full-Scale AI Systems

Nvidia is widely known for producing powerful computer chips used by leading artificial intelligence platforms, including ChatGPT.

Huang said Alpamayo marks a major transformation for the company.

“Alpamayo shows our shift from building computer chips to developing large-scale intelligent systems,” he explained.

Demonstration in San Francisco

During the presentation, Nvidia showcased a prototype Mercedes-Benz autonomous vehicle driving through the streets of San Francisco.

Passengers were seated in the back, while the person in the driver’s seat kept their hands resting on their lap, demonstrating full autonomous control.

Human Knowledge Meets Artificial Intelligence

Huang explained that the vehicle operates using knowledge provided by human experts and continuous AI learning.

“The car drives naturally because it has been trained by human knowledge. It also tells you what it plans to do next and thinks ahead,” he said.

The Future of Transportation

The unveiling of Alpamayo highlights Nvidia’s growing role in the future of transportation and artificial intelligence.

Experts believe this technology could redefine mobility, reduce accidents, and reshape how people travel worldwide.
