Gaspard Twagirayezu, Chief Executive of the Rwanda Space Agency (RSA), has been elected Vice President of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF).

The announcement was made on Tuesday, September 30, during the International Astronautical Congress taking place in Sydney, Australia.

At the event, Twagirayezu emphasized Africa’s vision of taking an active role in global space exploration—moving beyond being mere observers to becoming key contributors of knowledge and solutions that advance humanity’s progress in space.

Established in 1951, the IAF is the world’s leading space advocacy body, bringing together space agencies, industry players, universities, research institutions, and professional associations to promote collaboration and innovation in the space sector.

Twagirayezu has led the RSA since November 2024. Prior to this role, he served as Rwanda’s Minister of Education in 2023, after previously working as State Minister in charge of Primary and Secondary Education.

He holds both a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering and a Master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering, with a focus on Engineering Management, from Oklahoma Christian University in the United States.
