When iPhone 7 was released in 2016, Apple removed the traditional headphone jack, pushing many users toward Bluetooth audio. At first, it seemed like wired headphones would disappear completely. Many people switched to wireless devices, including the author, who reluctantly moved back to an iPhone after Android manufacturers also started removing the headphone jack.

However, the trend has recently shifted. Wired headphones are experiencing a strong revival as more consumers look for better sound quality and a simpler listening experience. According to the analytics company Circana, sales of wired headphones surged during the second half of 2025, and revenue increased by about 20% in the first weeks of 2026.

For some people, wired headphones feel more reliable and comforting. Users say they enjoy the simple experience of plugging in and listening without worrying about pairing devices, charging batteries, or losing tiny wireless earbuds.

Why Some People Prefer Wires

Sound quality is one of the biggest advantages of wired headphones. According to audio experts, wired models often deliver better sound for the same price compared with Bluetooth alternatives. Wireless headphones have improved significantly, but they can still suffer from connection problems, compatibility issues, or audio compression.

Wired headphones also remove the frustrations many people face with Bluetooth technology. Devices sometimes fail to connect, require extra steps to pair, or interrupt important moments. Some users say they prefer the simplicity of plugging a cable directly into their device and immediately getting clear audio.

Beyond performance, there is also a cultural shift happening. In some circles, wired headphones have become fashionable again. Social media pages even highlight celebrities and influencers wearing visible headphone cables as a stylish accessory. The trend reflects a wider movement in which people are rediscovering older technologies such as DVDs, cassette tapes, and film cameras, partly as a reaction to increasingly complex digital systems and artificial intelligence.

Adapting to Modern Devices

Despite their resurgence, using wired headphones with modern smartphones can still be inconvenient. Since many devices no longer include a headphone jack, users often need adapters—commonly called “dongles”—to connect traditional 3.5mm headphones to charging ports such as USB-C or Lightning.

Even though companies pushed wireless audio, wired options never fully disappeared. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, has previously acknowledged that the company still sells wired headphones because many customers continue to buy them.

For many listeners today, the choice between wired and wireless is not simply about technology. It reflects a balance between convenience and quality. While Bluetooth headphones provide freedom from cables, wired headphones offer reliability, strong sound performance, and a nostalgic simplicity that many people are starting to appreciate again.
