UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed Hamas’ statement expressing readiness to release hostages and engage with the Gaza peace proposal presented by U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a statement released Friday by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.

Guterres said he was “encouraged” by Hamas’ position and called on all sides to seize this opportunity to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He also expressed appreciation to Qatar and Egypt for their critical mediation efforts.

The UN chief reiterated his appeal for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, and unrestricted humanitarian aid to reach civilians in need. He affirmed that the United Nations stands ready to support all initiatives aimed at achieving these goals and alleviating further suffering.

Hamas, in its announcement, confirmed that it had delivered its response to Trump’s peace plan to both regional and international mediators. The group said it had agreed in principle to free all Israeli captives, whether alive or dead, and to hand over Gaza’s administration to an independent Palestinian technocratic authority established through national consensus and backed by Arab and Islamic nations.

Reacting to the statement, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Hamas appeared “ready for lasting peace” and urged Israel to halt its bombing campaign in Gaza. He added that discussions on the plan’s details were already underway, emphasizing that the initiative seeks broader Middle East peace, not just a resolution in Gaza.

Earlier in the week, the Trump administration unveiled a 20-point proposal following talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The plan calls for a ceasefire in exchange for the release of hostages, a gradual Israeli withdrawal, a demilitarized Gaza, and international supervision over its reconstruction and governance once the conflict ends.
