US promises 15-year security guarantee to Ukraine amid peace talks

The United States has promised to guarantee Ukraine’s security for the next 15 years, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced.

The pledge followed high-level talks between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump. The discussions were held on December 28, 2025, and focused on ending the war between Ukraine and Russia.

Zelensky described the talks as positive and said a peace agreement is now close. However, he stressed that Ukraine needs firm security guarantees to prevent future conflict.

“Without security assurances, we cannot say the war is over,” Zelensky said. “Peace cannot exist while a dangerous neighbor continues to threaten our borders.”

While welcoming the US commitment, Zelensky said Ukraine would prefer a longer-term guarantee. He explained that a 50-year arrangement would offer stronger protection and long-term stability.

Several major issues remain unresolved. These include territories currently under Russian control and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which remains occupied by Russian forces.

Zelensky insisted that decisions about these areas must involve the Ukrainian people. He also raised the possibility of creating neutral zones in disputed regions to protect civilians.

Russia has demanded that Ukraine withdraw its troops from the occupied territories. Ukraine has firmly rejected the proposal, saying such decisions must respect national sovereignty.

The United States, acting as a key mediator, has issued mixed messages on the future of these territories. At times, Washington has suggested Russia could retain control. At other moments, it has supported their return to Ukraine.

Despite these challenges, President Trump said negotiations are nearly complete. He estimated that talks are about 95 percent finished.

Trump added that the 15-year security guarantee would only take effect once a final peace deal is signed.

If successful, the agreement would represent a major diplomatic breakthrough. It could also reshape security relations in Eastern Europe for decades.
