AFCON 2025 has delivered drama from the group stage to nerve-shredding penalty shootouts. Now, the tournament reaches its defining moment with a blockbuster final between Senegal and hosts Morocco.

The two African heavyweights will battle for continental glory at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday, January 18, as each side seeks a second AFCON title.

Historically, Morocco hold the edge. The teams have met 31 times, with the Atlas Lions winning 18 matches. Senegal have claimed seven victories, while six games ended in draws. Their most recent encounter finished 1–1 in a friendly in August 2025. However, this final carries far higher stakes.

Morocco Chasing Long-Awaited Glory

For Morocco, this final represents more than a football match. The Atlas Lions last lifted the AFCON trophy in 1976 and have waited decades to return to the summit. This is also their first final appearance since 2004.

Under coach Walid Regragui, Morocco have built on the momentum from their historic semi-final run at the 2022 World Cup. Their squad blends experience and quality, led by Achraf Hakimi, tournament top scorer Brahim Díaz, and goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Morocco topped Group A with seven points and remained unbeaten throughout the competition. They beat Tanzania 1–0 in the round of 16, defeated Cameroon 2–0 in the quarter-finals, and edged Nigeria on penalties in the semi-finals. Moreover, they boast the tournament’s strongest defence, conceding just one goal so far.

Regragui acknowledged Senegal’s pedigree ahead of the final, noting their experience in high-pressure matches. At the same time, he stressed the added responsibility of playing in front of home supporters.

Senegal Aim to Confirm an Era

Standing in Morocco’s way are the Lions of Teranga, one of Africa’s most consistent teams of the past decade. Senegal are contesting their third AFCON final in the last four editions, underlining their dominance.

They topped their group ahead of DR Congo before eliminating Sudan, Mali, and Egypt. Senegal enter the final with the second-best defence, having conceded only two goals, and the second-best attack with 12 goals scored.

However, Senegal will miss captain Kalidou Koulibaly, who is suspended and injured. As a result, attention shifts to Sadio Mané.

Although no longer at his explosive peak, Mané’s leadership and experience remain decisive. After scoring the winning goal against Egypt, he described the journey as a collective mission and hinted that this could be his final AFCON appearance.

A Defining Night for African Football

For Morocco, this final offers a chance to fulfil a long-awaited dream on home soil. For Senegal, it presents an opportunity to cement their era with a second continental crown.

Kick-off: Sunday, January 18, 9:00 PM CAT.
