Airbus Surpasses Boeing in Passenger Aircraft Sales

Airbus has broken Boeing’s long-standing record to become the company that has sold the most passenger aircraft.

The European manufacturer achieved this milestone after selling its 12,260th aircraft from the A320 family, which first entered production in 1988.

When Airbus began producing aircraft, few believed it would ever compete with Boeing, but the company’s early adoption of advanced digital flight control systems soon proved to be a revolutionary advantage in aviation technology.

Today, Airbus and Boeing dominate the global passenger aircraft market, particularly for short- and medium-haul flights. Together, the two manufacturers have sold around 25,000 aircraft mainly the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families.

Boeing began losing market share in 2001, after Al-Qaeda used its Boeing 737 planes in the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, which killed nearly 3,000 people and destroyed the Twin Towers.

The tragedy led to widespread public fear of flying, and many airlines reduced their purchases of Boeing jets, though confidence eventually returned.

However, Boeing’s market troubles resurfaced in 2018 and 2019, when two 737 MAX planes crashed shortly after takeoff. Investigations revealed flaws in the aircraft’s design, prompting a global grounding of the 737 MAX fleet for two years.
