A$AP Rocky Reveals His Mother Pushed Him to Date Rihanna Years Before Their Romance

American rapper A$AP Rocky has revealed that his mother, Renee Black, played a key role in encouraging him to pursue a romantic relationship with global music star Rihanna, long before the two officially became a couple.

Speaking during an interview with Popcast by The New York Times, Rocky shared that his mother often urged him to look at Rihanna differently, even at a time when he did not believe a relationship between them was possible.

“My Mom Always Wanted Me With Rihanna”

Rocky explained that his mother repeatedly hinted that Rihanna would be the right partner for him, despite him being involved with other relationships at the time.

“My mom used to tell me, ‘I know you like the girl you’re with now, I won’t mention names, but I really want you to be with RiRi,’” he said.

He added that he often questioned her advice, believing Rihanna was out of reach.

“I used to ask her, ‘Mom, why do you always say that? She doesn’t even want me,’” Rocky recalled.

Time Proved His Mother Right

The rapper admitted that he later came to understand that parents often see what their children cannot.

Rocky said he now feels grateful that Rihanna came into his life at the right moment, noting that neither of them was ready for a serious relationship earlier.

“Parents really do know best,” he said. “I thank God that she came into my life when she did. Before that, neither of us was ready.”

From Friendship to Love

A$AP Rocky, now 37, revealed that he and Rihanna were close friends for nearly 10 years before their friendship turned romantic in 2020.

Although their love story took time to develop, Rocky said he always felt a deep connection with Rihanna.

“She was always my girl. I always felt her,” he said.

He also highlighted the strong similarities between them, including shared cultural roots and the fact that they were born the same year.

“We’re on the same wavelength. We were born the same year. My dad is from her country. When I go there, I see both sides of my family. We have so much in common—it’s funny.”
