German Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil said on Sunday that international law applies to all countries, including the United States. He reacted to President Donald Trump’s comments about taking control of Greenland. Klingbeil made it clear that only Denmark and Greenland can decide the island’s future.

He said countries must respect territorial sovereignty and national borders. Klingbeil warned that any U.S. military action against Greenland would harm NATO unity. He added that such a move would worsen relations between the United States and Europe. According to him, NATO allies should work together to improve Arctic security, not act against one another.

G7 to Focus on Access to Critical Minerals

Klingbeil spoke before traveling to Washington for a G7 finance ministers’ meeting. He said the talks will focus on access to critical minerals. Western countries want to reduce their reliance on China for these resources.

China has recently tightened export controls on rare earth minerals. This has raised concerns about supply security. Klingbeil said Germany supports stronger international cooperation in this sector. He believes cooperation will reduce dependence, secure supplies, and support stable economic conditions. The International Energy Agency reports that China dominates global mineral refining, including copper, lithium, cobalt, graphite, and rare earths.
