The Rwanda National Police (RNP) have arrested senior managers of Urubuto Hotel, located in Nyanza District, following the death of a security guard who drowned in the hotel’s swimming pool.

The deceased has been identified as Charles Nzabihimana, aged 45, who was employed as a security guard at the hotel. Urubuto Hotel is situated in Gakenkeri A Village, Nyanza Cell, Busasamana Sector, within Nyanza town.

Police Launch Investigation

The Spokesperson of Police in the Southern Province, CIP Hassan Kamanzi, told IGIHE that residents alerted authorities immediately after the incident occurred.

Police officers promptly responded to the scene and launched an initial investigation, which led to the arrest of two hotel managers for questioning regarding the circumstances surrounding the death.

“During the preliminary investigation, two hotel managers were arrested and are currently being held at Busasamana Police Station to assist with inquiries related to this death,” CIP Kamanzi said.

Call for Improved Swimming Pool Safety

Police authorities have urged hotel operators, especially those offering recreational facilities such as swimming pools, to strictly comply with safety regulations.

CIP Kamanzi emphasized the importance of having trained pool attendants or technicians on duty at all times when swimming pools are open.

“A qualified technician must always be present whenever the swimming pool is operational. If a pool opens in the morning and closes in the evening, supervision must be continuous. No minute should pass without someone monitoring the pool and ready to provide emergency assistance,” he said.

Body Taken for Medical Examination

The body of the deceased security guard was transported to Nyanza District Hospital for further medical examination as investigations continue.

Police have indicated that further details will be communicated once the investigation is completed.
