In a shocking political twist, French President Emmanuel Macron has reappointed Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister, just days after accepting his resignation earlier this week.

The announcement was made in a statement from the Élysée Palace on October 10, 2025, which read:

“The President of the Republic has appointed Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister and tasked him with forming a government.”

Macron had originally named Lecornu Prime Minister on September 9, a decision that faced criticism from opposition figures who argued that Lecornu represented “more of the same,” given his role in previous administrations.

On October 5, Lecornu unveiled his cabinet, which was likewise dismissed by opposition parties as uninspiring and politically stagnant.

Just a day later, on October 6, Lecornu tendered his resignation a mere 27 days after taking office citing policy disagreements, particularly over Macron’s decision to suspend pension reform talks.

“We need to find a way to reopen discussions on pension reform,” Lecornu said, warning that abandoning the plan which would have raised the retirement age from 62 to 64 could cost France €3 billion by 2027.

Macron’s decision to bring Lecornu back marks the appointment of his fifth Prime Minister since the start of his second term in 2022, reflecting persistent political instability within his administration.

His second term has been characterized by deep divisions and frequent cabinet reshuffles, with six different prime ministers having served since 2022.

Key issues driving the turmoil include disputes over budget priorities, national debt reduction, taxation, pension reform, and social welfare policy debates that continue to polarize France’s political landscape.
