In the Indian city of Murshidabad, located in West Bengal, this year’s Durga Puja festival sparked widespread attention after artists unveiled a striking depiction of Goddess Durga battling a demon that bears a strong resemblance to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Traditionally, the festival celebrates the triumph of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. But this year, organizers took a bold political turn, presenting Trump as the demon being vanquished by Durga a creative yet controversial statement.

Sanjay Basak, one of the festival’s organizers, told local media that the artwork was meant to express discontent over Trump’s trade policies and tariff measures, which he said were designed to “punish and undermine” India’s economy.

“This was our way of showing the frustration and anger of ordinary citizens over U.S. trade restrictions that have hurt Indian businesses,” Basak said. “Through art, we wanted to portray Trump as a force of harm being defeated by Durga’s positive power.”

The portrayal drew massive crowds, with thousands flocking to view the installation. Many saw it as a symbol of West Bengal’s cultural resistance and a reminder of how art and religion often merge to voice social and political sentiment in India.

Relations between the United States and India have faced tensions under Trump’s administration, particularly after Washington imposed steep tariffs on Indian exports a move widely viewed as an attempt to pressure New Delhi in trade negotiations.
