Technology company Waymo has announced plans to introduce its driverless taxi service in London in 2026, marking the UK capital as the latest city to join its growing network of autonomous transport hubs following a recent expansion to Tokyo.
Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., already has a presence in the UK after acquiring Latent Logic in 2019, a company based in Oxford that specializes in artificial intelligence for autonomous driving research. The firm also maintains an Oxford-based research branch focused on self-driving technologies.
The vehicles to be deployed Jaguar I-Pace electric cars equipped with Waymo’s advanced self-driving systems will initially operate with safety drivers on board to monitor operations. Once testing is complete and safety standards are met, the cars will begin fully autonomous rides across London streets.
Waymo is expected to collaborate with Moove, a mobility company that currently partners with Waymo in Phoenix, Arizona, to manage and oversee the new London fleet.
This move is part of Waymo’s broader expansion strategy, with operations already running in several U.S. cities including Austin, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The company is also preparing to roll out driverless taxi services in Miami, Nashville, and Washington, D.C.
