Modern technology to secure privacy of users

Every week, hundreds of millions of people use ChatGPT to think, learn, create, and manage some of the most personal parts of their daily lives. People trust the platform with private conversations, files, searches, payments, and even AI agents that act on their behalf. Because of that, their data is treated with the highest level of privacy and security.

Recently, that commitment to privacy is being challenged. A large request has been made demanding access to 20 million private ChatGPT conversations. The justification behind this request is based on assumptions that have nothing to do with the majority of users whose data would be exposed. This demand ignores basic privacy standards and would involve releasing extremely personal information belonging to people who are not connected to any issue at hand.

This is not the first time such pressure has appeared. At one point, there was even an attempt to remove the option for users to delete their own chats. Later, a request was made for over a billion conversations. Each time, strong opposition was necessary to protect users’ privacy—and that continues today.

Protecting people’s private conversations is a core responsibility. No one’s personal data should be treated as a bargaining chip for unrelated matters.

To strengthen privacy protections even further, major upgrades are underway. These include advanced security systems, client-side encryption for messages (so conversations stay private even from the service provider), and automated systems that only involve human review in extreme cases—like threats to someone’s safety or major cybersecurity risks.

As AI becomes more integrated into people’s lives, the protection of private conversations must grow stronger, not weaker. The goal is simple: ensure that everyone can trust their AI assistant with their most personal thoughts, knowing their information remains secure.
