Scientists have discovered a new fish species in China. The discovery occurred in the Zayul area, western Xizang region. Researchers say the finding expands knowledge of freshwater biodiversity.

Research Conducted in Zayul River

The research began in April 2025. Scientists carried out the study in the Zayul River, located in southern western Xizang. The area lies near the southern slopes of the Himalayas.

Unique Features of the New Species

The newly identified species is named Glaridoglanis verruciloba. It belongs to the glyptosterine catfish group. The fish has a widened lower mouth and other distinct physical traits.

These features separate it from known species in the same genus.

Institutions Behind the Discovery

Researchers collected fish specimens during field studies. The team included experts from Xizang Museum of Natural Science. Zaozhuang University and the Institute of Hydrobiology also participated.

The project involved cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Initial Misidentification Corrected

At first, researchers mistook the species for Glaridoglanis andersonii. However, further analysis changed this conclusion. Scientists conducted detailed morphological examinations.

They also used evolutionary and genetic analysis methods.

Confirmation Published in ZooKeys

The team confirmed the fish as a new species after careful evaluation. Their findings appeared in the international scientific journal ZooKeys. The publication formally recognized the species.

Scientific Importance of the Discovery

Researchers say this is the third recognized species in the Glaridoglanis genus. The discovery provides new research opportunities. It will support studies on evolution and species diversity.

The findings also improve understanding of freshwater fish near the Himalayas.
