Rwanda has welcomed back 277 Rwandans who had been held by the FDLR, an armed terrorist group operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo and opposed to the Government of Rwanda.

Those who returned in this latest group were mostly women and children, and they crossed the border through the La Corniche border post, which links Rwanda and the DRC.

The repatriation follows agreements reached during a trilateral meeting held in Addis Ababa on July 24, 2025, involving Rwanda, the DRC, and the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR).

Before returning home, these Rwandans were being kept at a temporary camp in Goma, after fleeing areas in eastern DR Congo where they had long been held hostage by the FDLR.

The Mayor of Rubavu District, Prosper Mulindwa, assured the returnees that the Government has programs to help vulnerable citizens regain stability and reintegrate into society.

He explained that these returnees will be supported according to their needs and the opportunities available in the areas where they will settle.

Once they complete a short stay at a transit center in Kijote (Nyabihu District), they will receive initial assistance to help them restart their lives.
Adults over 18 will receive 188 USD, children will receive 113 USD, and each individual will also be provided with basic food supplies valued at 45,000 Rwandan francs.
