The Rwandan national carrier, RwandAir, has announced that it will begin operating flights on the Zanzibar Mombasa route starting December 1, 2025.

In a statement released on September 29, 2025, RwandAir indicated that the new route, Zanzibar Mombasa, will be served by a Boeing B737, with four weekly flights: on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

RwandAir is resuming flights to Mombasa for the first time since 2019, while Zanzibar becomes a brand new destination. With these additions, Rwanda will now serve three destinations in Tanzania and two in Kenya.

RwandAir CEO, Yvonne Makolo, said:
“Resuming flights to Mombasa and launching services to Zanzibar is another step in our growth journey… Expanding our footprint in East Africa strengthens Kigali as a strategic hub, offers our customers more opportunities to explore the region, and opens doors for trade, tourism, and enhanced cooperation across East Africa.”

The inaugural flight on the new route will depart Kigali at 9:50 AM, arriving in Zanzibar at 12:50 PM. After a short stop, it will continue to Mombasa, departing Zanzibar at 1:40 PM and landing at 2:35 PM.

For the return leg to Kigali, the flight will leave Mombasa at 5:10 PM, reach Zanzibar at 6:05 PM, depart at 7:00 PM, and arrive back in Kigali around 8:00 PM.

This expansion is in line with the Government’s five-year development plan, which prioritizes strengthening air transport by increasing RwandAir’s destinations and doubling the number of passengers traveling with the airline.
