Residents of Huye District have welcomed the steady development of the Sovu Industrial Zone, saying it is already improving their livelihoods through job creation and economic growth.
Local authorities say the industrial zone remains a priority area for investment, with continued improvements in infrastructure aimed at attracting more industries and increasing productivity.
Growing Opportunities for Employment
Located in Huye Sector, the Sovu Industrial Zone hosts several industries involved in agro-processing, manufacturing, and other industrial services.
Residents say the presence of these industries is creating employment opportunities, particularly for young people who previously struggled to find work.
Nsengiyumva Jean de Dieu, a resident of Huye Sector, said the industrial zone has restored hope in the community.
“The establishment of industries here in Sovu is a major step forward,” he said. “Some young people already have jobs, and we believe more opportunities will come as the zone continues to grow.”
Benefits for Local Farmers
Farmers in nearby areas say the industrial zone is also helping them secure reliable markets for their produce.
Mukamana Vestine, a farmer from Sovu Cell, said the presence of industries has changed how local farmers plan their production.
“We used to farm without knowing where to sell our harvests,” she explained. “Now we are confident that these industries will provide a stable market, which will improve our living standards.”
District Invests in Infrastructure
The Mayor of Huye District, Ange Sebutege, said the Sovu Industrial Zone is a cornerstone of the district’s economic development strategy.
“The Sovu Industrial Zone is one of the foundations of Huye District’s development,” Mayor Sebutege said. “We are investing in roads, water, and electricity to ensure industries operate smoothly and sustainably.”
He added that the district is working closely with national institutions to support investors and attract more industries to the zone.
Part of Rwanda’s National Development Strategy
Industrial zones across Rwanda were established as part of the government’s strategy to accelerate economic development and promote small and medium-sized industries.
Construction of the Sovu Industrial Zone began in 2016. In 2017, it was strengthened under the National Strategy for Transformation (NST1) to enhance productivity and expand its economic impact.
Promising Future for Huye
Residents and leaders agree that continued investment in the Sovu Industrial Zone will play a key role in boosting household incomes, expanding employment, and driving sustainable economic growth in Huye District.
As more industries set up operations, the zone is expected to further transform the local economy and improve the quality of life for surrounding communities.
