Burkina Faso’s interim President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, arrived in Moscow on Wednesday, May 8, 2025, to join in the 80th anniversary celebrations of Victory Day. The event commemorates the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Traoré’s presence highlights Burkina Faso’s growing relationship with Russia, especially in areas like defense and infrastructure. His attendance is part of Russia’s wider plan to build stronger connections with African countries, particularly as it faces isolation from the West due to the conflict in Ukraine.

The Victory Day parade on May 9 included leaders from 29 countries, among them Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Western leaders were noticeably absent, signaling a change in global alliances.

During the celebrations, Burkina Faso’s National Police Orchestra and the Golden Team dance group performed “Katyusha,” a famous Russian wartime song, demonstrating cultural unity between the two countries.

President Traoré is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 10 to discuss cooperation on issues such as counterterrorism and infrastructure projects.

As Russia aims to increase its influence in Africa, Traoré’s visit marks a key moment in Burkina Faso-Russia relations, showing a shared interest in expanding their diplomatic and strategic partnerships.
