U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a decree committing his country to defend Qatar in the event that it comes under attack.

The order, signed on September 29, 2025, states that any assault on Qatari territory will be considered a threat to U.S. security, prompting immediate American action.

The decree reads: “The United States will regard an armed attack on the territory, sovereignty, or critical infrastructure of the State of Qatar as a threat to the peace and security of the United States. In the event of such an attack, the United States will take all legally authorized and appropriate measures.”

The measures the U.S. plans to employ in the event of an attack on Qatar include “diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military actions to safeguard the interests of both the United States and the State of Qatar, and to restore peace and security.”

Trump issued this decree after Israel’s air force carried out a strike on the city of Doha on September 9, targeting Hamas leaders who were staying there for peace talks.

The attack was condemned internationally and led Trump to summon Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, demanding that he apologize to his Qatari counterpart and give assurances that such provocations would not happen again.

The Qatari government welcomed Trump’s decree, saying it reinforced its ongoing role in peace negotiations in the Middle East and reaffirmed its commitment to work with the U.S. and other countries to achieve that goal.
