More than 42 million Americans could lose access to federal food aid in November 2025, following a partial government shutdown caused by the failure to approve a new budget on time.
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins, told the press that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) cards which help low-income families buy food will run out of funds within the next two weeks.
“We are talking about millions of struggling families households that can barely afford meals will no longer receive this support because of the government shutdown,” Rollins said.
Like other officials in the Trump administration, Rollins blamed Democrats for prioritizing their “political agendas over the well-being and food security of American families.”
Current data shows that one in eight Americans relies on SNAP to afford groceries. Since May 2025, each recipient has been receiving $188 per month in benefits through the program.
