Over 600 adolescents in Kigali received mental health treatment in just over a year. Most of them sought care for the first time. Health officials highlight growing awareness of youth mental health issues in Rwanda.

Kigali Mental Health Referral Centre report

Dr Dynamo Ndacyayisenga, Director of Kigali Mental Health Referral Centre, said the facility has treated more than 600 young people in one year and five months. About 52% of patients were girls.

Many children were referred by family or friends. Dr Ndacyayisenga notes that Rwandan families are increasingly encouraging mental health care for their children.

Recognizing early signs

Experts warn that mental health issues often go unnoticed in children. Behavioral changes may be mistaken for personality problems rather than illness.

Warning signs include:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Mood swings or sudden anger
  • Disruptive behavior toward others
  • Self-harm or aggression
  • Loss of interest in activities

Parents are encouraged to seek professional help if these symptoms appear.

Mental health statistics in Rwanda

A 2019 RBC study showed that one in five adults experiences mental health challenges. Among youth, one in seven is affected, while one in ten children may experience mental health issues.

Centre’s role in Rwanda

Kigali Mental Health Referral Centre opened in January 2024. It supports existing facilities like Ndera Hospital in providing specialized mental health care. Officials hope the centre will continue raising awareness and improving access for young people.
