In Nyamasheke District, Karambi Sector, GS Karambi continues to make remarkable strides in the education sector, earning a reputation as one of the most exceptional schools in Rwanda. The institution is recognized for its innovative approach and unique programs that are uncommon in other Rwandan schools, all aimed at enhancing education quality and ensuring students’ well-being.

This school caters to 2,450 students across both primary and secondary levels, with a strong focus on holistic care and daily routines that support learning and personal development.

Key Innovations and Unique Practices

Breakfast for All: Every student is provided with a nutritious morning meal to start the day with energy and focus.

Supper with Eggs: Evening meals include eggs to ensure proper nutrition and brain development.

Siesta: Students are given time for a mid-day rest to recharge, improving concentration and productivity in afternoon classes.

Aerobic Exercise: Physical activity is mandatory, promoting health, fitness, and a positive mindset among learners.

ICT Integration: (Smart Learning for the Future): GS Karambi has also embraced technology as a key driver of modern education. Teachers integrate projectors and OLPC (One Laptop per Child) devices into both teaching and evaluation. This ICT strategy not only enhances student engagement but also allows for interactive learning experiences that make lessons more visual and understandable.

“It is a strategy which is not expensive, yet it transforms the teaching and learning process,” said the school’s ICT coordinator.Through this integration, students are gaining essential digital literacy skills that prepare them for the technological world of today and tomorrow.

Exceptional Academic Oversight

GS Karambi boasts a dedicated Quality Team composed of three educators, each tasked with monitoring different student groups:

1. Primary Level Focus: Oversees primary students, particularly those in P6.

2. Lower Secondary Focus: Monitors students in S1–S3.

3. Upper Secondary Focus: Supports students in S4–S6.

This team collaborates closely with the Director of Studies (DOS), Director of Discipline (DOD), and exemplary teachers to provide personalized support for students’ academic progress.

Addressing Large Student Numbers

Due to high enrollment, GS Karambi previously faced challenges in ensuring consistent academic performance. The school responded innovatively by creating small study groups, enabling students to review lessons collaboratively and receive peer support.

This strategy has produced remarkable outcomes:

S3 (2024–25): All 137 students passed, with 112 awarded letters to attend vocational and boarding schools.

S6 (2024–25): Out of 85 students, 82 passed. Only three students in the Languages & Intercultural Studies track (LFK) did not qualify, while the other tracks (HGL and MPG) achieved 100% pass rates.

MPG Track (Mathematics, Physics, Geography): All 22 students passed, scoring between 64% and 84%.

Student and Teacher Testimonials

Macrine NSHUTI YIZEWE, an S6 MPG student, shared:

“Being provided breakfast and eggs every day keeps hunger at bay and helps my brain function optimally. I study with energy, and I can confidently say this support contributed to my academic success.”

Pacifique NKURIYINGOMA a member of the Quality Team, added:

“We observed that when students learn in small groups and receive individual support, they are less overwhelmed by large class sizes. This method has produced outstanding results.”

A Model of Excellence

GS Karambi stands as more than just a school it is a center of educational innovation, collaboration, and student welfare.

The principal concluded:

“We thank parents, teachers, and students for partnering with the school administration on this journey. Today’s results are proof that high-quality education can benefit every child, creating a bright future when we all work together.”
