However, European leaders quickly rejected the threat. French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe would not accept intimidation. He also stressed that European sovereignty must be protected.
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said sanctioning allies is wrong. According to him, such actions weaken NATO security. In addition, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the move was a mistake. She explained that countries helping to secure Greenland should not face punishment.
Sanctions Threat Raises Fears for NATO and Trade
Meanwhile, Trump defended his position by pointing to security risks in the Arctic. He claimed the U.S. needs Greenland to counter Russia and China. However, experts say current defense agreements already meet those needs.
As a result, European officials fear growing divisions among allies. They warn that sanctions could weaken NATO unity. In addition, the dispute may delay a U.S.–EU trade deal agreed last year. Therefore, many European leaders now call for a united and firm response.
