US and Russian Envoys Hold Talks about Ukraine peace plan

Envoys from the United States and Russia met at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The talks involved representatives of President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin.

Russia refused to comment on details but said it wanted updates on discussions between the US, Europe, and Ukraine. Russia’s TASS news agency reported that US envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev met for more than two hours. Witkoff later said the talks went well.

Putin Set to Meet US Envoys

Witkoff told the Associated Press that he and Kushner planned to meet President Putin and Ukrainian officials on Thursday. The Kremlin confirmed that Putin had scheduled the meeting in Moscow.

The confirmation showed that diplomatic contacts continue despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Ukraine Reconstruction Deal Put on Hold

The signing of an $800bn Ukraine reconstruction plan did not take place in Davos. The Financial Times reported that tensions inside NATO caused the delay. The dispute followed President Trump’s renewed push to acquire Greenland.

Officials said the agreement remains possible at a later date. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned allies not to let the Greenland issue weaken support for Ukraine as Russian attacks continue.
