Technology experts say SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, has begun providing free Starlink satellite internet in Iran.

The move comes as Iranian authorities face accusations of violently suppressing nationwide protests.

Internet Shutdowns Spark Global Concern

In recent days, the Iranian government cut off internet access across the country.

Authorities claimed protesters were being influenced by foreign actors.

The shutdown left millions unable to communicate or share information with the outside world.

Starlink Activated to Support Protesters

Ahmad Ahmadian, CEO of the technology firm Holistic Resilience, told CNN that Starlink was activated earlier this week.

He said the service is being offered at no cost.

“It is simple to install and use,” Ahmadian explained.
“You place the satellite device in an open area, and it starts working.”

Trump and Musk Held Phone Call

The development followed a phone conversation earlier this week between US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

The discussion reportedly focused on providing Starlink internet access in Iran.

However, neither SpaceX nor the White House has officially commented on the call.

Human Rights Groups Welcome the Move

Experts say free internet access will help human rights defenders and protesters.

Only a small portion of Iran’s 92 million people can currently access online services.

Ahmadian said strict information controls made Starlink the only reliable way to share evidence globally.

“It allows the world to see what is happening on the ground,” he said.

Iran Attempts to Block Starlink

Iranian authorities are reportedly trying to disrupt Starlink signals inside the country.

The government has banned the use of Starlink equipment.

The ban was introduced after a 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran last year.

Internet Control Remains Centralized

Doug Madory, an analyst at network monitoring firm Kentik, said internet shutdowns are easy for Iran to enforce.

He explained that only two major companies provide internet services nationwide.

This centralized system allows authorities to quickly restrict access.

US Signals Support for Protesters

President Trump has urged Iranians to continue protesting against the government.

He said all options remain on the table to support demonstrators.

These include political, economic, and military measures.
