Ahead of its annual developer event, Google previewed key features of Android 17. The new operating system focuses on artificial intelligence, user experience and improved connectivity across devices
AI Integration with Gemini
Android 17 introduces Gemini Intelligence, an advanced AI system designed to handle complex tasks. It can read emails, assist with online shopping and perform multiple actions beyond answering questions.
Voice to text capabilities have also improved through Rambler. The system can understand natural speech, remove unnecessary words and translate languages in real time.
Improved Device Connectivity
Google enhanced Quick Share to work more smoothly with Apple’s AirDrop across devices from brands like Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo and Xiaomi.
Users switching from iPhone to Android can now transfer data wirelessly, including messages, making the transition easier.
New Tools for Digital Wellbeing
A feature called Pause Point helps users manage screen time. When opening selected apps, the phone introduces a short delay and suggests alternative activities.
Content Creation and Camera Enhancements
Android 17 introduces Screen Reactions, allowing users to record themselves while presenting content, similar to a green screen effect.
The system also improves integration with Instagram. Features like Ultra HDR enhance image quality, while night photography and video stabilization tools become available directly within the app.
Visual and Interface Updates
New 3D emojis called Noto 3D will debut on Google Pixel devices. Android Auto also receives updates with a redesigned interface using Material 3 Expressive and enhanced 3D navigation visuals.
Gemini will assist drivers by summarizing messages and performing tasks without distracting them from the road.
Stronger Security Features
Android 17 adds advanced protection against fraud. In partnership with banks, the system can detect suspicious calls and identify potential scams.
A new Mark as Lost feature locks the device using biometric data, preventing access even if a password is known. Quick Settings access will also be restricted when the phone is locked.
Release Timeline
The beta version of Android 17 is already available. The full public release is expected later this year.
