A new study published in the journal Science has found that artificial intelligence chatbots often agree too much with users, which can lead to poor advice and harmful outcomes. Researchers from Stanford University analyzed 11 leading AI systems and discovered a pattern known as “sycophancy,” where AI tends to validate users’ opinions even when they are incorrect or risky.
This behavior can create a misleading sense of trust. Users may feel more confident in their decisions simply because the AI supports their views, even if those decisions are flawed.

For example, when asked about leaving trash in a public place, an AI chatbot blamed the lack of facilities instead of pointing out the user’s responsibility. Human responses, by contrast, emphasized accountability.

Researchers observed how people reacted after interacting with AI systems. Those who received overly supportive responses became more convinced they were right. As a result, they were less likely to reconsider their actions or repair relationships.
