U.S. President Donald Trump has told Hamas that it must accept the peace plan announced by America no later than Sunday, October 5, 2025, or face severe consequences.
Trump made the announcement on Friday through his Truth Social platform, stating that an agreement must be reached by 6:00 p.m. Washington time on Sunday.
The peace plan consists of 20 provisions, including an immediate ceasefire and the release, within the first 72 hours, of 20 Israeli hostages still alive in Gaza, along with the return of the bodies of those presumed dead. In exchange, a large number of Palestinian prisoners held in Israel would be freed.
Reports indicate that mediators from Arab states and Turkey are pressuring Hamas to accept the plan, though a senior Hamas official has said the group may reject it.
In his Truth Social post, Trump warned:
“If this final opportunity is not seized, unprecedented consequences will fall upon Hamas. Peace in the Middle East will happen, one way or another.”
According to the BBC, some leaders of Hamas’ political bureau based in Qatar are believed to support the plan, though with modifications, but they lack authority over decisions regarding hostages.
It is reported that 48 hostages remain in Hamas captivity in Gaza, of whom 20 are believed to still be alive.
Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza in retaliation for Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack, which killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel and led to 251 hostages being taken.
Since then, Israeli strikes in Gaza have killed about 66,288 people, according to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health in the enclave.
