The White House has announced that government employees across various federal agencies may soon begin to face layoffs due to the suspension of certain operations.
The shutdown of some government activities began on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, after members of Congress failed to reach an agreement on the federal budget.
Republican senators, who currently hold the majority, needed 60 votes for the budget bill to pass. However, with only 53 Republican seats, they required support from some Democrats — something that did not happen, as Democrats refused to back the bill.
One of the main reasons for their refusal was that the proposed budget cut funding for healthcare subsidies provided to low-income citizens and reduced government spending in the health sector.
On Thursday, October 2, 2025, the White House stated that this failure to pass the budget bill had already led to the suspension of some operations, and it could result in government workers being dismissed, since there is little hope of quickly resuming the halted programs.
It was noted that there are few signs of either side making concessions to allow the bill to pass and resolve the crisis.
Since the budget vote was delayed, senators have warned that the shutdown of certain operations will impact thousands of citizens who may lose their jobs, with ripple effects on the U.S. economy.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Vice President JD Vance, alongside Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, accused Democrats of playing political games.
Karoline Leavitt added that many government activities will begin shutting down within the next two days.
She continued: “Sometimes you have to do things you didn’t want to do. The Democrats put us in this situation.”
