Egypt advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after edging Benin in a tense last-16 clash decided in extra time. Mohamed Salah scored late to seal a dramatic victory for the Pharaohs.
The match, played in Marrakesh, offered few clear chances during normal time. For long spells, Salah remained quiet as both sides struggled to break each other down.
Attia Breaks the Deadlock
After a goalless first half, Egypt finally found a breakthrough. Marwan Attia scored with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area. His effort flew into the top corner with just over 20 minutes remaining.
At that stage, Egypt appeared in control. Benin created little and struggled to threaten the Egyptian goal.
Benin Force Extra Time
However, Benin equalised late in the match. Junior Olaitan’s cross took a heavy deflection. Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy could only push the ball onto his line. Jodel Dossou reacted first and tapped in from close range with seven minutes left.
As a result, the game moved into extra time.
Set Piece Turns the Match
During extra time, both teams cancelled each other out again. Eventually, a set piece made the difference. Yasser Ibrahim stretched to meet the ball near the penalty spot and sent it looping past Benin goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou.
Soon after, Egypt struck again. In the final minute, Salah raced forward and curled a superb shot with the outside of his left foot from long range. The goal sealed Egypt’s place in the quarter-finals.
What Comes Next
The defeat ends Benin’s hopes of matching their 2019 quarter-final run. Meanwhile, Egypt will now face either Ivory Coast or Burkina Faso. That quarter-final match will take place in Agadir on Saturday at 19:00 GMT.
