Russian Ballistic Missile Strike on Kyiv Kills 14, Injures 22 in One of the Deadliest Attacks This Year

Russian missile and drone assault devastates Kyiv region as Ukraine calls for stronger air defenses

A large-scale Russian ballistic missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, and the surrounding region has killed at least 14 people and injured 22 others, according to Ukrainian officials. The overnight assault, which began shortly after midnight on Wednesday, is among the deadliest attacks on Kyiv this year.

The strikes targeted multiple districts around the Ukrainian capital, damaging residential buildings, warehouses, and other infrastructure while emergency crews continued searching for survivors trapped beneath the rubble.

Multiple districts hit during overnight attack

Kyiv Military Administration chief Timur Tkachenko said Russia launched a massive barrage of ballistic missiles against the Kyiv region, triggering air raid sirens that lasted for more than an hour.

According to officials, nine people were killed in the Boryspil district, four in Bucha, and one in the Fastiv district. At least 22 others were injured, with four reported to be in critical condition.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said rescue workers were racing to locate people believed to be trapped under collapsed buildings in the city.

Emergency responders worked throughout the night to extinguish fires and search damaged residential areas following the strikes.

Russia says military facilities were targeted

Russia’s Ministry of Defence said the operation targeted logistics hubs, weapons storage facilities, and drone production centers in Kyiv and the surrounding region.

The ministry also claimed it struck three cargo vessels near the Black Sea port of Odesa, alleging they were transporting weapons and military equipment.

Ukraine, however, accused Russia of deliberately attacking civilian infrastructure and residential neighborhoods.

Tensions continue to escalate

The latest missile barrage comes as fighting between Russia and Ukraine continues to intensify. In recent weeks, Russia has increased its attacks on Kyiv, while Ukraine has stepped up drone strikes on Russian territory, including attacks targeting infrastructure and logistics facilities.

Both countries continue to accuse each other of attacking civilian areas while denying intentional strikes against non-military targets.

Ukraine renews call for Patriot missile systems

Following the latest attack, Ukrainian officials once again appealed to Western allies for additional U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.

Kyiv says strengthening its air defense remains one of its highest priorities as missile and drone attacks continue across the country.

Rescue operations remained underway Wednesday morning as authorities assessed the full extent of the damage and searched for anyone still trapped beneath the debris.
